Flavour Of The Day With Noora

Being The Step-Mama

If you ever thought that being a mama was hard, then you have clearly never tried to be a step-mama.
I am the step-mama of a wonderful 8-year-old girl and believe me when I say that it is by far, the most difficult and important job that I have ever had.

The rules are all different when you have a step-child; the standards are all unbalanced. With my own son, I can be angry, have a bad day, plan some time away and discipline, guilt and worry free.

On the other hand, when it is your step-child, you, your moods, and your methods, fall captive to a young personality that still does not know its own strength.

8-years-old, as I have come to realise lately, is a difficult age. I need help and advice. Anyone?

Anonymous said... comment might come a bit late but let me tell you, I feel your pain! Well, it is not pain really but yes, I couldn't agree is a very difficult job. I have two step- children and they were 5 and 6 years old when I married my husband. Today they are nearly 13 and 12 years old, they live with us so when I marries my husband I marries a family and not a man alone. It is very challenging especially now that they are hitting their teen years but it is wonderful when I think I am their mother. This is how we started our relationship off and this is how it is now; they call me Mama, they worry if I get upset about a bad grade or if they did something wrong, they treat me as their mom and I as my own. However, it is still very challenging especially with extended family and friends who seem to always question the reality of this relationship and if it is really true that it can work. I don't care so much about their opinions as it works fine with us ..yet like any relationship it has its moments and yes, they are quite different than how things would go if they where really your own. I have a new baby of my own now and the kids love him; I feel no jealousy at all especially that my husband and I retry hard to make things fare. Sorry for making this long but again I can see your point and I am in the same boat.
